Abdool Karim, Salim

Abdool Karim is Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research), Univ. of KwaZulu Natal and dir., CAPRISA (Centre for the AIDS Program of Research in South Africa). He is prof., Clinical Epidemiology, Columbia Univ. and adj. prof. of Medicine at Cornell Univ., USA. He obtained his medical degree, 1983 and PhD, 1999, Univ. of Natal. His scientific contributions are in HIV prevention (microbicides and vaccines) and AIDS treatment including tuberculosis co-infection. His awards include: TWAS Prize in Medical Sciences 2008; Acad of Science in South Africa’s Science-for-Society Gold Medal; African Academy of Science’s Olusegun Obasanjo Prize; African Union’s "Kwame Nkrumah Continental Scientific Award”, and MRC's “Platinum Medal Lifetime Achievement Award”. Memberships include: WHO Expert Adv. Panel on STI and HIV; Academy of Science of South Africa; African Academy of Science; U.S. National Academy of Medicine: American Academy of Micro and the World Academy of Sciences, and Royal Society South Africa.
